A biodegradable artery graft helps regenerate an artery in 90 days after surgery, leaving no trace of synthetic graft materials in the body.
The cell-free technology has the potential to transform coronary artery bypass surgeries.
Research published online June 24 in Nature Medicine highlights work led by principal investigator Yadong Wang, a professor in the Swanson School of Engineering and the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, who designed grafts that fully harness the body’s regenerative capacity.
This new approach is a philosophical shift from the predominant cell-centered approaches in tissue engineering of blood vessels.
“The host site, the artery in this case, is an excellent source of cells and provides a very efficient growth environment,” says Wang. “This is what inspired us to skip the cell culture altogether and create these cell-free synthetic grafts.”
What’s that? Coat hangers, you say? Well, I’ll be damned!
This is apparently coming out in 3 days.
In 3 days, I’m going to start to be a total jogging addict, I think
I’ve been beta testing it and I can confirm it’s actually the greatest app ever. Full iOS release date is as specified, Android release this Spring.
It’s so intense, at one point during the first mission when radio contact was lost, I could hear them trying to contact me “Can you hear us?!” and I literally grabbed the mic and shouted, “I CAN HEAR YOU WHAT DO I DO?” even though that’s not how it works.
I’m just glad nobody was near me.
Oh my god, I cannot wait. Cannot. Wait.
I have never wished I had a smartphone until right now.
I just legitimately got so excited oh my god I’m freaking out, WHAT THE FUCK!
Omg. Yes.
I will definitely have to try this…maybe I’ll become a better runner at the same time? =D
